About the Position: The position is located at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, 6900 Georgia Ave., NW Washington, DC 20307-5001. The work environment is in the Microbiology Section. The applicant will work with the latest technologies in the field and can expect a challenging and friendly environment. Pre-Appointment Physical with color vision screening is required. Work Shift is Evenings (1500-2300). This is a mandatory drug testing position.

Key Requirements:

Major Duties:
Performs specialized and technically demanding tests. Handles unusual test requests, identifies and resolves inconsistent test results. Develops new solutions to methodological problems, analyzes test systems, and devises plan to achieve objectives. Evaluates new procedures that may be commercially available or developed in-house. Records results through a variety of data entry modes into laboratory computer systems, and retrieves information upon physician requests. Deals directly with patient care physicians. Reviews daily quality control data and communicates problems to the technical specialist or section supervisor. Recognizes and solves quality assurance problems. Troubleshoots instruments, test methods, and processes. Coordinates the handling and resulting of proficiency testing specimens. Consults with manufacturers. Remains current on universal precautions. Participates in continuing education. Serves as liaison between supervisor and other subordinates.

General Schedule
•Basic Requirements: A. Degree: medical technology, chemistry, or biology including or supplemented by at least: 16 semester hours of biological science (one course in microbiology and one course in immunology). The remaining biology courses must have been in general biology, zoology, or any areas listed below;16 semester hours of chemistry (one course in organic or biochemistry). The remaining chemistry courses must have been in general chemistry, qualitative analysis, qualitative chemistry, quantitative chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, or any of the areas listed below; and 3 semester hours of college math; OR, B. A 4-year course of study including or supplemented by at least 12 months in a college or hospital-based medical technology program or medical technology school approved by a recognized accrediting organization. The professional medical technology curriculum may have consisted of a 1-year post-baccalaureate certificate program or the last 1 or 2 years of a 4-year program of study culminating in a bachelor's in medical technology; OR C. A combination of (1) at least 35 semester hours of biological science, chemistry, and math described above (2) additional appropriate education and/or experience totaling 4 years. Combination of education/experience must have provided knowledge of theories, principles, and practices of medical technology equivalent a full 4-year course of study described in A or B above. All science and math courses must have been acceptable for credit toward meeting the requirements for a science major at an accredited college/university. Acceptable experience is responsible professional or technician experience in a hospital lab, health agency, industrial medical laboratory, or pharmaceutical house; or teaching, test development, or medical research program experience that provided an understanding of methods/techniques applied in performing professional clinical laboratory work. In addition to the requirements, this position requires a Selective Placement Factor of ASCP Certification. Be sure to include all your certifications in your resume. This certification will be used as an indicator of the Knowledge, Skills and Abilities that you possess to perform satisfactorily in this position.
